We’re better than this

To hear the boos as Bush walked out on the field to throw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals game, broadcast throughout the world on ESPN last night, really disappointed me.    The beauty of our country is that it does allow such behavior but the ugly reality is that people don’t recognize that they are also disparaging the position itself, the Presidency.  If you don’t want to cheer the man, don’t, I’m sure he’d get the message by your lack of response, but show some decency and respect toward your country and the toughest job in an extremely complicated and difficult world.

You are right. We are better than this.
What about a the good old fashioned smarmy patronizing chanting of his name?
How about the standard “na na naaa na –na na naa na — hey hey — goodbye?”
What if they pelted the field with 4,000 tiny coffins painted with american flags.
What about playing catch with waffles of mass deliciousness?
What about a buffalo eating a dolphin?
I think the croud was too respectful.
    We are better than this.
As the tiny top of the kilowatt used to say “Don’t get me started!”

Good discussion starter, Barry, but my sentiments lie with the respondents. Any other person on that diamond risked receiving public scorn by the paying customers on the basis of on-field performance or off-field behavior or both. Would you conclude that the position of pitcher, umpire, manager, batboy, whatever, was being disparaged? I would not.

    American Heritage Dictionary
    dis•par•age

    1. To speak of in a slighting or disrespectful way; belittle.
    2. To reduce in esteem or rank.

Nothing screams “America” more than opening day baseball in Washington, DC. Personally, I felt a certain disappointment after the boos, and I’m no huge fan of W’s body of work. Nothing screams “America” more than your freedom to voice your criticism of anything or anyone (Presidents, Pitchers, Popes and Politicians).
Personally, however, I have my own internal limits as to when and how I might choose to voice the criticism. I wouldn’t have booed Bush but I probably would have booed an umpire if I thought he blew a call. I wouldn’t boo a player for making a bad play but might boo him for off-field behavior. I guess I’d consider my boos as “dis-satisfaction with an action” rather than a “disparaging or belittling”. So I’m not sure what this all says, other than I may be talking out of both sides of my mouth, but everyone has to make their own personal choices as to etiquette and decorum. I just think, from a personal standpoint, it wasn’t the time or the place. God Bless America and it is OK to disparage Willis McGahee, Roger Clemens, Elliot Spitzer and Nagafooki.
